Je Suis Charlie

Dear Parents,

I'm sure you've heard of the recent tragedy in Paris, France through the media. A satirical magazine in France, Charlie Hebdo, published a comic displaying an image of Muhammad, which angered Islamic extremists due to the fact that it is against their religion to show the face or voice of their prophet. Two of these extremist shot dead 12 staff members of the Charlie Hebdo Magazine in their headquarters in Paris, France. Of these 12 people, many of them were the writers for the magazine, however some innocent lives were also sacrificed, such as the woman at the front desk.

I just want to let you know that I am safe and well. The shooting occurred in the 11th arrondissement while my roommate and I live in the 5th. I have hardly left my apartment since the incident. I see many peaceful protests in the streets arguing that Charlie Hebdo was just exercising his right to Freedom of Speech. Yes, they had the freedom of speech to express their opinions, however it was disrespectful to the Muslim culture, which seems to be present in France. Murder is never justified, and the Islamic gunmen took the matter too harshly. I believe that both sides are in the wrong. In every day life, you have the freedom to say what ever is on your mind. However even with this right, you wouldn't purposely say something that would offend someone. And in this case, the satirical comic offended an entire religion. This of course does not justify the shootings that the Islamic extremists committed.

This incident was not isolated. In 2006 Charlie Hebdo had published a set of 12 cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. They had received a series of death threats from the Islamic community. With this in mind, I’m curious to why Charlie Hebdo would post yet another comic exposing the face of Muhammad after the incident in the past. They must have known that their would be a strong backlash and serious consequences for going against the Muslims’ wishes. Both sides should not have done what they have done and it is tragic that one set of comics had to lead to the deaths 12 people.
